Tropical Storm Danny has weakened over the Atlantic and is barely a tropical storm as it hits the North Carolina shoreline.

It's maximum sustained winds have decreased to about 40 miles an hour.

But forecasters warn it could still produce dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents along the Outer Banks and up through New England in the next day or two.

The National Weather Service warned there could be swells as high as seven feet offshore as the storm passed the area.

A tropical storm watch for the North Carolina coast remains in effect for Friday.
