Need Some Exercise? Just Take a Pill

If only loosing weight were easy, right? Now, scientists have developed a pill that mimics the effects of exercise on the body.

Everyone knows that getting enough exercise is the cornerstone of good health. However, not everyone does it, mostly because of the time and the effort involved.

But what if you could get all the benefits of a good workout without even having to break a sweat?

Gym Trip in a Pill

The pill's medicinal effect on the body is the same as a trip to the gym, but the only workout you do is popping it in your mouth.

University of Texas researchers tested the exercise pill on mice for a month. Lazy mice lost fat without diet or exercise.

"You're tricking the muscle to believe it's actually exercising," said UT health researcher Dr. Vihang Narkar.

Children who can't use some of their muscles, like those who live with muscular dystrophy or spina bifida, would especially benefit from an exercise pill.

"Wow, something like that could actually help me," said Regan Fontineau, who has spina bifida.

Safe? Maybe Not Yet

Although the exercise pill sounds like a miracle, it does have its drawbacks.

"The side effects in the study with the mice showed that they did have some renal effects, kidney effects and heart effects," said Dr. Lynnette Mazur, chief pediatrician of Shriners Hospital in Houston.

Researchers still have to conduct human test trials. If all goes well, a safe exercise pill is still at least 10 years away.
