Investigators are looking into claims of a botched abortion by a controversial abortionist in Maryland.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports abortionist Dr. Steven Brigham has been accused of trying to cover up the mistake. He allegedly took a critically injured patient to the hospital in a private vehicle, instead of calling an ambulance.

Brigham conducts abortions in New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The Maryland Board of Physicians has ordered Brigham to stop performing abortions. He was never licensed to practice medicine in Maryland, but is licensed in New Jersey.

Authorities said he's also being investigated for initiating late-term abortions in his four clinics in New Jersey and then sending patients over state lines to complete the abortions.

Brigham's clinics in New Jersey cannot administer abortions after the first trimester because they fail to meet state safety requirements.
