The American Medical Association is calling on advertisers to limit digital manipulation of magazine covers and advertisements.
Several studies have shown exposure to pictures, like altered magazine covers, can lead to eating disorders and other health problems.
"Such alterations can contribute to unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image - especially among impressionable children and adolescents," the medical organization said in a statement.
The AMA has adopted a new policy that encourages ad agencies to work with organizations devoted to child and adolescent health to develop guidelines for ads.
