Bill Nye, the Science Guy, claimed this week that America is being held back by parents who don't believe in evolution, and pass on their belief to their children.
On the Big Think web site, Nye pleads with parents not to teach their children to disbelieve in evolution, "...because we need them."
He said that evolution is so central to science that when Americans don't buy into it, "it holds everybody back."
Now a Christian geneticist has posted an online rebuttal to Nye.
Answers in Genesis Science Director Georgia Purdom told Nye that she and many other Christian parents teach their children about both evolution and Biblical creation.
But she also argued that evolution can't explain how organisms "go from simple to complex over time."
Purdom, herself a scientist, holds a doctorate in molecular genetics.
Nye said that fossils and the light from distant stars can't be explained unless Earth and the universe are billions of years old.
Purdom replied that that's a human theory. She believes that the Bible is God's eyewitness account of how it all began.
