Meningitis Outbreak Prompts Pressure for More Oversight

The Centers for Disease Control is struggling to keep up with a deadly meningitis outbreak from contaminated steroid shots for back pain.

Over the weekend the number of cases jumped from 198 to 205 people infected. At least 15 people have died in the outbreak.

The New England Compounding Center, the company responsible for the contaminated shots, is now facing several lawsuits and a congressional investigation as a result.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Congress to increase oversight of similar companies.

"Congress must now wake up, pass a law, so that the FDA can protect the American health and safety," Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said.

As many as 14,000 people may have received the injections, according to the CDC.
