Researchers in Houston have conducted 3,000 free MRI heart screenings for teenagers.
Dr. Jim Willerson, president of the Texas Heart Institute, said about one young athlete dies unexpectedly every month during sporting activities. He wants to prevent those deaths by learning which children are at risk of a heart attack and why.
"It's our hope...that this would lead to a screening processing in all schools that would be nearly fool proof and that would prevent this problem," Willerson said.
The number of serious heart problems discovered so far is five times higher than the researchers expected.
Texas Heart Institute plans to give at least 10,000 total free heart screenings, and it hopes to continue the program into the future.
