Astronauts: Blind Luck Preventing Asteroid Calamity

Three former NASA astronauts say it's just "blind luck" that Earth hasn't experienced a catastrophic impact from asteroids big enough to wipe out an entire city.

Universe Today reports Ed Lu, Tom Jones, and Bill Anders are presenting new evidence that the planet has had far more asteroid impacts in the last decade than previously thought -- in fact, three to 10 times as many.

The evidence comes from a nuclear weapons test warning network, which found there have been 26 huge explosions since 2001, all of them from asteroid impacts.

None of the impacts were detected ahead of time.
