The Department of Veterans Affairs is reporting a sharp increase in suicides among young veterans.

According to the latest data, the suicide rate for male veterans between the ages of 18-29 increased nearly 44 percent from 2009 to 2011. The rate among female veterans increased more than 11 percent.

The agency said too many younger veterans getting care for physical wounds are not seeking treatment for mental health issues.

Suicide rates among veterans are higher than non-veterans for both men and women.
