High cholesterol levels are growing among kids, according to a new study out of Texas.

The study found that one-third of pre-teens have borderline high or high cholesterol, and though it may not be too harmful at a young age, doctors warn that half of those with high cholesterol as children will have it as adults.

"A concerning number of children are at risk of heart problems later in life, and more needs to be done to prevent this at an earlier age," Dr. Thomas Seery, with Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, said.

That raises the risk for hearts attacks, strokes, and other problems.

The new findings will be presented at the American College of Cardiology this weekend by Dr. Seery.

It suggests that cholesterol screening should start at nine.
