Extreme Solar Flare Heading toward Earth

A powerful solar flare is heading toward the Earth and it could potentially disturb power grids, satellites, and radio transmissions.

Though solar flares are not uncommon and don't harm humans directly, this particular storm is unusual because of its strength and that it's coming from the middle of the sun.

Scientists aren't sure which part of the Earth will bear the brunt of the extreme solar flare, but the worst of its effects apparently will stay a safe distance away.

A direct hit from a future solar storm could cause extensive damage to communications and power systems and satellites in orbit.
