Polio-Like Illness Affecting Children in California

A mysterious polio-like illness has been affecting a small number of children in California since 2012.

Symptoms of the strange disease include extreme weakness and rapid paralysis in one or more limbs.

The Los Angeles Times reports state public health officials have been investigating the illness since 2012, when a physician requested polio testing for a child experiencing severe paralysis.

The symptoms sometimes occur after a mild respiratory illness.

Since that 2012 incident, similar cases have been sporadically reported throughout the state.

Doctors investigating the illness have ruled out polio. They will present their cases at an upcoming annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology.
