A severe solar storm smacked the Earth with a surprisingly big geo-magnetic jolt Tuesday, but no damage has been reported.

The storm ranked a four on a scale of five, and it's the strongest solar storm to hit Earth since the fall of 2013.

Two magnetic plasma bursts left the sun on Sunday and reached Earth about 15 hours earlier and much stronger than expected.

Although this storm hasn't had a noticeable effect, scientists have warned a future storm could potentially hurt power grids and GPS tracking.
