CBNNews.com - GAZA STRIP - Palestinian gunmen blew up a monument to foreign soldiers in a British-run cemetery in the Gaza Strip.
The six-and-a-half-foot monument stood in the Gaza War Cemetery, where gravestones of Christian and Jewish foreign soldiers are marked by crosses and the Star of David, respectively.
Britain's consulate general in Jerusalem issued a statement following the incident.
"The history of this region is complex. But the right of the dead to lie in peace and dignity is simple and should be respected by all. We hope the authorities in Gaza will make every effort to apprehend those responsible," the statement read.
Mohammed Awaja, responsible for the cemetery's upkeep, heard the explosion from his home, but didn't realize gunmen had destroyed the monument until a couple of hours later.
No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.
