Attorney Exposes 'Acid Libel'

JERUSALEM, Israel - Yossi Fuchs, an attorney running on the Likud Knesset list, filed a libel complaint against a possibly fictitious report issued Thursday during the government's evacuation of Jewish residents of Hebron's Beit Hashalom (Peace House).

The complaint accuses Hebron Police Commander Avashalom Peled and the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) regional spokesman of fabricating a report that a Jewish activist threw acid on a police officer, causing serious injuries.

A quick survey of emergency medical personnel at the scene of Thursday's eviction in Hebron revealed that no one was treated for such injuries.

Fuchs, who also serves as co-chairman of the Land of Israel Legal Forum, recalled a similar incident during the expulsion in Kfar Darom, one of the 21 former Jewish communities in the Gush Katif Settlement Bloc in the Gaza Strip.

In that incident, a report accusing Jewish residents of throwing acid at soldiers was widely disseminated by Israeli media outlets.

While the incident was disproved, Fuchs called the reports "part of an incitement campaign against pioneers who were pained by the expulsion from their forefather's land" and were, in reality, "a real blood libel."
