GAZA STRIP - Advisors to President-elect Barack Obama met secretly with Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip prior to the U.S. presidential elections, according to a senior Hamas official.
In an interview with the London-based Arabic daily al-Hayat, Hamas political advisor Ahmad Yousef said initial contact with Obama's staff was established via the Internet.
"We first made contact on the Internet and then met with some of them here in the Gaza Strip. They advised us not to reveal this information lest it influence elections or be manipulated by McCain's campaign," Yousef said.
"We are maintaining contact with them," he said, without elaborating.
Yousef said he maintained contact with several of Obama's advisors whom he'd met when he lived in the U.S.
"Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh will draft a congratulatory letter to Obama for his victory in the elections," Yousef told al-Hayat.
