CBNNews.com - DEAD SEA, Israel - The Moscow Municipality plans to build a hotel on 10 acres recently purchased in Ein Bokek on the shores of the Dead Sea.
"We bought land in Israel on which to build a hotel to serve the people of Moscow, around the mud that heals dermatological diseases," Moscow's mayor, Yuri Luzhkov said Wednesday. He also said the municipality's 2009-2011 budget, which passed this week, allocates funding for the project.
In March, the mayor, accompanied by several officials from the municipality, toured the property with Dov Lightbinuf, chairman of the local council for the area around Ein Bokek.
At a follow-up meeting in Moscow, Lightbinuf and Luzhkov agreed to go forward with the project.
Whether the sale has been approved by the appropriate Israeli authorities remains unclear, but many complex, unresolved issues remain.
The Lands Authority maintains that national land may not be "given away to strangers unless the matter is specially approved by the director general."
