CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - In view of the growing threat of war, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) Home Front Command plans to conduct the nation's largest-ever military exercise, scheduled to take place in about two months.
"In wartime, there will be insufficient Magen David Adom [Israel's national emergency rescue service], rescue and chemical and biological warfare units," Col. Hilik Sofer of the Home Front Command told the Israeli daily Haaretz.
"Even if we call up the Home Front Command reserves, we will have to rely on the population itself," he said.
Sofer said the IDF wants to transform the population "from passive to active."
"We want citizens to understand that war can happen tomorrow morning," he said.
Neither the Defense Ministry nor the IDF would be able to carry out mass evacuations, Sofer explained.
The colonel hopes the mega-exercise will instill "a healthy sense of fear."
"The entire population will participate in the exercise, not only the schools - everyone," he said.
"We will all need to practice for the short warning - that we will have to seek shelter from the moment missiles begin falling," Sofer said.
