Cyprus Detains Iranian Arms Ship

Ad Feedback - LIMASSOL PORT, Cyprus - Cypriot officials have detained an Iranian arms ship at the behest of Israel and the United States.

The freighter, flying the Cyprus flag, remains docked at the country's Limassol port.

At a press conference in Washington earlier this week, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said US Navy officers searched the ship, with the captain's permission, as it waited to enter the Suez Canal.

Though the search revealed its weapons cargo, the US did not have the legal means to detain it.

The admiral said the UN would have to pass a more specific resolution before any arrests could be legally made.
