CBNNews.com - GAZA STRIP - The Hamas terror organization has taken over the smuggling tunnels that survived Operation Cast Lead, including those operated by local Palestinian clans.
During the three-week Gaza op, the Israel Air Force (IAF) destroyed 80 percent of an estimated 300 smuggling tunnels.
Some of the remaining 20 percent survived because of their reinforced construction, but others were purposely not targeted to avoid civilian casualties.
Fuel tunnels in particular were spared to avoid massive explosions on both sides of the border, which could have taken a huge toll of civilian lives.
The Hamas takeover of the remaining tunnels will allow it to prioritize arms smuggling over other goods entering Gaza through the underground channels.
In addition to weapons and explosives, the tunnels are used for a variety of products in short demand in the Strip, including livestock, cigarettes, foodstuff, etc.
Since declaring a cease-fire, 12 hours after the Olmert's government announced a unilateral cease-fire nearly a week ago, Hamas has worked to reassert its control throughout Gaza.
