BIR ZEIT, West Bank - An Israel Defense Forces soldier died from gunshot wounds to the head during a pre-dawn reconnaissance operation in the Arab town of Beit Zeit, north of Ramallah.
The soldier was identified as Noam Adin Rechter-Levi, 20, from Mitzpe Netofa in the Galilee.
Rechter-Levi was part of the Kfir infantry brigade's Duchifat Battalion, often assigned to counter-terror operations in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).
Early reports said a shot was heard just after an officer and a soldier separated from the unit to circle around behind the fighting.
Medics treated Richter-Levi at the scene, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, it became evident that Rechter was killed by a bullet from his own weapon, but the details of what happened are still being investigated.
The IDF arrested 16 wanted terror suspects in several PA-controlled towns overnight: three in Nablus (biblical Shechem); four in Shubaka, northwest of Ramallah; one in Haja, east of Kalkilya; three in Deir Sahah near Bethlehem, one in Tzurif and four in El Arub, southwest of Bethlehem.
The IDF said there were 57 terror attacks in Judea and Samaria in April, up from 46 in March. Hurling Molotov cocktails at Israeli vehicles is happening with some frequency.
In a separate incident at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron, an Israeli Border Policeman shot and killed a Palestinian man suspected of attempting a terror attack, after he fled from one guard post to another, refusing to stop.
IDF sappers called to the scene to make sure he was not wired with explosives found that he was unarmed.
