KALKILYA, West Bank - Palestinian Authority (PA) policemen opened fire on an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) unit, which had entered the city to arrest suspected terrorists.
PA security forces fired at the soldiers from a nearby house. Two soldiers who sustained shrapnel wounds were evacuated to Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikvah for treatment.
The soldiers returned fire, moderately injuring one of the policemen, who was transported to a hospital in Kalilya.
According to a preliminary investigation of the incident, the PA forces were looking for covert Hamas cells in Kalkilya.
An order to leave the area prior to the IDF operation was issued too late.
Besides that, some of the soldiers were undercover - not in uniform - so the policemen opened fire at their vehicle, perhaps thinking they were Hamas operatives in disguise.
Meanwhile, twenty-six wanted men were taken in for questioning.
The IDF has been regularly coordinating counter-terror operations in the area with PA security forces.
Later on Thursday, IDF and PA officials planned to investigate the incident more thoroughly.
