JERUSALEM, Israel - The Shin Bet cautioned Israeli users on Monday that terror groups have begun using social networking Web sites, such as Facebook, to gather information and recruit members.
Some terror cells may even try to entice Israelis to travel abroad to set them up for kidnapping, Shin Bet officials said.
"Terror organizations are using these sites to tempt Israelis to meet up in person in order to abduct them, kill them or recruit them as spies," the agency said.
Israelis should be wary of arranging to meet people they know only through the Internet.
Shin Bet officials said terrorists are particularly interested in Israelis who had access to classified information during their military service.
In once instance, someone asked a young Israeli on Facebook to transfer classified information for a fee.
Shin Bet officials cautioned Israelis about posting personal contact information, such as phone numbers and addresses, on Facebook or other social networking Web sites and to be cautious in communicating with strangers on the Internet or the phone.
People were asked to report any suspicious incidents to the Shin Bet.
