JERUSALEM, Israel - The Army of Islam, an al-Qaeda-linked terror group operating in the Gaza Strip, posted a 30-second audio statement in Hebrew on the Internet Thursday vowing to avenge the deaths of two of its senior commanders.
Islam Yasin and his brother, Muhamad, were killed Wednesday in an Israeli airstrike while driving in northern Gaza.
Less than two weeks ago, the IAF target Yasin's associate, Muhammad Jamal Fares Namnam in his car.
The speaker, who identified himself as a member of Jemaa Ansar al-Sunna, vowed to avenge their deaths, warning that the "aggressor Jews" will not be safe until they "leave the land of Palestine."
Israeli intelligence veteran Matti Steinberg, an expert in Islamism, said it was unusual for an al-Qaeda-affiliated group to speak in Hebrew, though they have used languages other than Arabic.
"Here, by contrast, it seems the idea is to make Jews feel that the threat is close at hand and not some distant menace," Steinberg said.
Army of Islam has been planning to kidnap Israelis vacationing in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, the IDF Spokesman's Office reported.
Yasim also assisted the head of Mamtaz Dur'mush, another Gaza-based terror group, according to the IDF.
