IDF Boosts Forces along Egyptian Border

JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff deployed more troops along the border with Egypt and the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, the IDF Spokesperson's office said.

Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz ordered the troop reinforcement "due to a concrete warning that the Islamic Jihad organization is intending to carry out a terrorist attack in the region," the IDF said in a statement.

Israel coordinated the deployment with the Egyptian army and said again it holds Hamas responsible for all terror attacks emanating from the Gaza Strip.

Egypt also coordinated the deployment of 1,500 troops to the Sinai with Israel.

Following the Aug. 18 terror attacks, Gantz implemented new methods to secure the border and bolstered intelligence capabilities in the area, including unmanned aerial vehicles -- drones.

"Residents of the border region rely on us to protect them," Gantz said Friday during a tour of the area.

"Terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip are exploiting the security situation in Sinai to use it as a springboard to execute attacks on the border with Israel," he said, adding that "peace with Egypt has great strategic importance."

Last week, Egypt announced plans to close arms smuggling tunnels along the border with the Gaza Strip.
