JERUSALEM, Israel -- More than 20 rockets and missiles hit southern Israel overnight Wednesday despite the ceasefire declared by Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli pilots scored direct hits on a weapons storage facility, a weapons manufacturing site and an arms smuggling tunnel, the Israel Defense Forces Spokesman's Office reported.

"Overnight, IAF aircraft targeted a weapons storage facility in the northern Gaza Strip, as well as a smuggling tunnel and weapons manufacturing site in the southern Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed," the IDF statement read.

Earlier, the IDF targeted an Islamic Jihad cell, killing a senior commander in the al-Quds Brigades, Islamic Jihad's "military" wing, and wounding several others, Palestinian sources reported.

"Israel will pay a heavy price for this crime," the al-Quds Brigade said in a statement.
