JERUSALEM, Israel -- Gaza-based Palestinians fired nearly a dozen rockets and mortars on southern Israel overnight Sunday, a follow-up of more than 25 rocket attacks Saturday, which killed one man and injured several others.

Moshe Ami, 56, a father of four, died on the operating table at Ashkelon's Barzilai Medical Center from shrapnel wounds he sustained while trying to take cover from a Grad missile.

Islamic Jihad, which claimed responsibility for most of the attacks, agreed to stop the assault by 6 a.m. Sunday, though four more rockets were fired afterward.

The terror group initially rebuffed Egyptian efforts to mediate a "ceasefire" but later agreed on the condition that Israel not retaliate.

With each airstrike, the Israel Defense Forces Spokesman's Office reminds Hamas -- the Palestinian faction ruling Gaza -- that it is "solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip."

"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers and will continue to operate with strength and determination against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel," the Spokesman's Office stated after pinpoint airstrikes on training camps and launch sites.

One airstrike Saturday against an Islamic Jihad cell killed five of its members, including senior commander Ahmed Sheikh Khalil, responsible for the group's rocket manufacturing facilities.

On Saturday, the Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted and destroyed two Grad-type missiles fired at Ashdod, just up the coast from Ashkelon.

On Sunday, a number of Israeli cities within a 20-mile radius of Gaza closed schools to keep children out of harm's way.
