JERUSALEM, Israel -- An estimated 10,000 people will take part in the 25th annual of the March of the Living in Poland on Thursday.
The march, held on Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 19 this year), traces the exact route -- the March of Death -- that Jewish prisoners walked from Auschwitz to Birkenau, where thousands were exterminated in the gas chambers.
More than 100 Holocaust survivors will participate in this year's march, along with veterans of the U.S. and Russian armies, who helped liberate the camps.
The march, meant to help educate the next generation on the Nazi atrocities, attracts mostly high school students.
Many participants spend a few days in Poland before traveling to Israel where most stay to celebrate Yom Ha'atzma'ut (Independence Day), this year falling on April 26.
