JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz said nations threatening to eradicate Israel “will meet the deadly force of the IDF.”
“We have yet to reach a state of calm,” Gantz told participants at the annual memorial ceremony for fallen Golani Brigade soldiers Wednesday. “These days, explicit threats to the security of Israel and its citizens are often heard,” he said, calling them “a mistaken assessment of our strength and capabilities.”
“Those who believe they can eradicate Israel and try to harm our country will discover the deadly strength of the IDF,” he warned.
Gantz may have been responding to remarks the day before by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.
In typical Iranian rhetoric frequently heard from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khameini, Salehi called the Jewish state “a malignant tumor… doomed to be destroyed.”
“Israel is not in a position that allows it to go to war with Iran,” Salehi claimed.
But Gantz said Israeli forces are prepared for any eventuality.
“In light of these threats, we stand prepared along our country's borders with soldiers and commanders who rank among the best and most courageous in the world,” the IDF chief said.
