JERUSALEM, Israel -- A report by ABC Australia says a prisoner who committed suicide in an Israeli prison in 2010 was an Australian citizen named Ben Zygier, recruited by the Mossad, Israel's secret service.

According to the report, the story behind his death is "one of the most sensitive secrets of Israel's intelligence community."

Zygier reportedly moved to Israel 10 years ago, took the name Ben Alon, married an Israeli, had two small children and was 34 years old when he died.

"Zygier's apparent suicide in prison adds to the mystery," the report states. "He was found hanged in a cell that was equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance systems installed to prevent suicide."

A week after his death, Zygier's body was returned to Melbourne for burial. The report said his family, friends, and acquaintances refused to speak with the reporter.

Meanwhile at a Knesset session broadcast live on Tuesday, MKs Ahmad Tibi (Ta'al), Zehava Gal-On (Meretz), and Dov Khenin (Hadash) questioned Justice Minister Ya'akov Neeman about the report.

Australian officials said they would review its Foreign Ministry's handling of the case.

Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr told the Associated Press that some government officials knew about his detention in 2010, contradicting an earlier statement by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade claiming they weren't aware of his status until his death.
