JERUSALEM, Israel -- The European Union should blacklist Israel's military, Sheikh Hassan Nassrallah said, in his first response to the European Union's unanimous decision earlier this week to brand Hezbollah's "military wing" as a terror organization.
"Why don't you classify the State of Israel as a terror state?" Hezbollah's spiritual leader said in a speech broadcast by video link from his hideout. Nasrallah almost never appears in public.
"Why don't you classify Israel's military wing, the IDF, as a terror organization if you recognize Israel is occupying Arab lands and refuses to implement international decisions for decades now?" he said, predicting the decision would benefit Israel far more than Europe.
"The Israelis clearly stated the decision was a result of their diplomatic efforts…These [European] countries have made themselves a full partner in responsibility for any Israeli aggression against Lebanon," he continued, saying the European Union had harmed its own interests more than "the resistance."
Nasrallah scoffed at the notion of freezing the terror group's funding or issuing travel bans against its operatives, warning the designation would reap "failure and disappointment."
The Syrian foreign ministry also blamed Israel for the European Union's decision, saying it would only affect Israeli "plots" in the Middle East.
