JERUSALEM, Israel -- There was tragedy at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City early Friday when a private security guard shot and killed a man he suspected was a terrorist.

The guard told police the man, whose name has not been disclosed, shouted Allahu Akbar (Allah is greater) in the men's public restroom, the declaration Islamists use before an act of terrorism, as he reached into his pocket and pulled an object out.

Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said "the fact that he shouted Allahu Akbar, that seems to be why the security guard drew his weapon and fired a number of shots at him."

The victim is a Jewish man in his mid-40s who frequents the site.

"He always acts strange," YNet quoted one Israeli. "Everyone knows him. He once said he'd become a Muslim. I guess the security guard didn't know him."

Magen David Adom paramedics called to the scene tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Police cleared the Western Wall of early morning worshippers before closing the site to the public.
