JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israeli President Shimon Peres celebrated his 90th birthday with a host of celebrities and diplomats Tuesday evening.
Among the distinguished guests were former President Bill Clinton, Britain's Tony Blair, Prince Albert of Monaco, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, and Barbra Streisand and her husband, James Brolin.
One guest after another praised Peres for a lifetime devoted to his beloved homeland.
After a beautiful rendition of one of the president's favorite songs, Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, Our King), Streisand welcomed the birthday celebrant to the podium to address the crowd.
"I love this country," Peres told participants. "I am in love with my people, who can be passionate and short-tempered."
"Their language is sometimes less than diplomatic but at the same time their understanding, their creativity, their courage and the goodness of their heart, their generosity and the warmth they exude can melt hearts," he continued.
"The same Israeli who will curse a driver who unfairly overtook him on the road will willingly give up his life on the battlefield for the sake of his country or to save the life of a brother," Peres said.
