JERUSALEM, Israel -- This Sunday millions of Christians and thousands of churches around the world will take part in a global day of prayer, fulfilling the biblical command in Psalm 122:5 to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
Organizers of this year's day of prayer, Oct. 6, say it's vital to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Robert Stearns co-founded the call a decade ago.
"So we gather together the first Sunday of every October globally, 174 nations participating. Close to 300,000 churches registered last year praying for the peace of this city," Stearns told CBN News.
The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem reaches around the world, but Stearns said it's an initiative for the local church to be watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem.
"Not gathering them to this city necessarily or to a meeting, but in their local churches and whatever church they are in -- a Methodist church or an Episcopalian church or evangelical church -- wherever they are, let's fulfill Psalm 122:6 and 'Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may they prosper who love you,'" Stearns said.
Stearns believes it's always important to pray for Jerusalem, but especially in the times in which we live.
"In the modern State of Israel in just the past 65 years, never has she been surrounded by such incredible unrest. The unrest in the Middle East is absolutely extraordinary," Stearns explained.
"Certainly this part of our world, which then affects the whole globe, is going through -- let's believe it to be -- the birth pangs of revival," he continued. "That it would be the birth pangs of something greater to come…that we would see shalom [peace]."
The Day of Prayer event will be broadcast globally by God TV.
