JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israel's Knesset has chosen a new president to succeed Shimon Peres.

Former Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin, a long-time Likud Party member, defeated former Kadima Party member Meir Sheetrit by 10 votes.

The 90-year-old Peres was one of the country's founding fathers and a strong supporter of a Palestinian state.

Rivlin opposes Palestinian statehood.

Peres will step down when his term ends on July 27.
