JERUSALEM, Israel -- As Israel prepares to host Pope Francis beginning on Sunday, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat says the historic visit will be very important to showcase his city.

"This visit is of historic importance and paramount significance to Jerusalem and as we complete the preparation of the city for the visit, we will reveal the capital of Israel as a modern city that is open to all the world," Barkat told reporters earlier this week.

Barakat, in his second term as mayor, has worked hard to make Israel's capital a destination for people of all faiths and interesting to those who don't have one -- hosting events such as an annual marathon.

On Wednesday, the municipality announced plans to line the streets with 1,000 Israeli, Jerusalem and Vatican flags to welcome Pope Francis to the city.
