Egyptian troops are demolishing hundreds of homes, hoping to destroy terror tunnels along Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip.

They're evicting thousands of residents in a volatile part in the Sinai Peninsula, an area that has been a hub for Islamic radicals for at least a decade.

The demolitions are meant to halt the smuggling of weapons and terrorists in and out of Gaza.

And the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said security forces have found dozens of tunnels under evacuated houses.

The Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas has long used tunnels into Gaza to fuel its attacks against Israel.

Egypt announced the demolition plan last month after militants killed 31 Egyptian troops in an assault on a checkpoint.

The Egyptian government says it will compensate the families whose houses are being demolished.
