Obama Admin. Spied on Israel's Netanyahu during Iran Nuke Deal

JERUSALEM, Israel -- There are new revelations the Obama administration spied on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while the U.S. was negotiating its nuclear deal with Iran.

President Barack Obama instructed the National Security Agency to continue monitoring Netanyahu even after promising he would discontinue spying on friendly heads of state, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In 2013, Obama announced that world leaders, such as German Chancellor Angela Markel and French President Francois Hollande, would no longer be subject to U.S. eavesdropping.

Netanyahu's strong opposition to the U.S.-led Iranian nuclear deal apparently justified continued surveillance on the grounds of "compelling national security" interests.

The agency even captured private conversations between Netanyahu, his aides, members of Congress, and U.S. Jewish groups.

The White House apparently wanted to know if Israel became aware of its secret negotiations with Iran and how it planned to respond.
