JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended condolences to French, German and Spanish leaders on the tragic airliner crash that killed 150 passengers and crew, among them 16 children.

Netanyahu sent a letter of condolence to French President Francois Hollande and spoke by phone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Eyal Baum, 39, an Israeli living in Barcelona, was among the passengers, most of whom were French, Spanish and German.

Netanyahu extended condolences to Baum's family and to others who lost relatives in the crash.

"At this difficult moment, I embrace the family of Israeli citizen Eyal Baum and send condolences to the families of the passengers from Germany, Spain, Turkey and Belgium who have lost loved ones," Netanyahu said.

The airbus, operated by Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, en route from Barcelona to Duesseldorf, went down in a remote area of the French Alps Tuesday.

French authorities will examine the airliner's black box to try to determine the cause of the mass-casualty incident. They said the remote terrain, coupled with weather conditions, would make it unlikely to airlift victims' bodies before Wednesday.

Search teams remained in the area overnight.
