JERUSALEM, Israel -- The Iron Dome Aerial Defense System intercepted a rocket fired on southern Israel Tuesday, the third day of the Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles.

There were no injuries, but residents of the coastal city of Ashdod and nearby communities were compelled to seek the safety of their bomb shelters.

In response to the attack, Israeli pilots targeted four terror sites in the Gaza Strip.

"This evening, the third day of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, a rocket was fired at southern Israel, sending the residents of Ashdod as well as several surrounding communities to nearby bomb shelters," IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said in a statement.

Lerner said Israel holds Hamas responsible "for every attack emanating from the Gaza Strip."

"The IDF will continue defending all Israelis who are repeatedly attacked by such blatant acts of aggression," the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, sporadic rock and fire-bomb attacks continued in predominantly Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem, including Jerusalem's Old City, as well as in Hebron and Rachel's Tomb near Bethlehem. Firefighters extinguished a blaze from a firebomb thrown at an IDF base on Mount Scopus.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas is addressing the U.N. General Assembly Wednesday and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
