Palestinian rioting resumed on Jerusalem's Temple Mount as the weeklong Jewish holiday of Sukkot got underway Monday.

Israeli police have beefed up security after multiple clashes in recent weeks.

A police spokeswoman said Palestinians threw rocks and firebombs. The unrest took place during the first day of the biblical Feast of Tabernacles.

"It is inconceivable that a group of rioters desecrate a holy place and endanger lives," Jerusalem Police Chief Moshe Edri said.

The compound, which is the site of two biblical Jewish temples, is sacred to Jews. Muslims believe it's where Mohammed ascended to heaven.

It's been a frequent flashpoint of violence.
