Wednesday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The U.N. General Assembly designated the annual commemoration on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.

The U.N. says it wants member nations to honor the victims of the Nazi era.

U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington has posted videos depicting how some courageous people in Europe risked their lives to rescue Jews during the Nazi reign of terror.

CBN Middle East Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell talks about how Israelis view the importance of remembering the Holocaust.

At Wednesday's ceremonies, Holocaust survivor Haim Roet, father of Israel's Deputy U.N. Ambassador David Roet, spoke about his story, Jerusalem Post reported.

"Having my father relate his story to the nations of the world at the hall I know so well, with my children listening in the audience, symbolizes to me his ultimate victory," the ambassador told the Post.

"I'm particularly proud that my father chose not only to tell his story and the story of the Jewish people in the Holocaust, but to call on the nations of the world to work to end genocides of all people everywhere," he said.

At the invitation of Ambassador Danny Danon, survivor Marta Wise, 81, also addressed the General Assembly on behalf of the State of Israel.

"As a child in Auschwitz-Birkenau, I could have never imagined that one day I would represent the State of Israel at the U.N.," the Post quoted Wise as saying.
