Supreme Court Fight Centers around
Abortion Debate

WASHINGTON – The battle over the next Supreme Court justice
has promised to become a bruising affair, with both sides agreeing
that abortion will be in the middle of it.
The fight over who will sit on the U.S. Supreme Court may become
a boxing match. Democrats will land blows, and Republicans will
counter punch. The ring will be inside the famous Russell Caucus
room, home to the Watergate hearings, and the bruising Clarence
Thomas Supreme Court hearings. It will be the site of this major
fight too.
It seems the biggest sparring will occur over abortion. Democrats
want to know if the candidate agrees with the Roe v. Wade decision
that legalized abortion in this country. Republicans say a candidate
should not have to answer that. But they say a nominee can disagree
with Roe v. Wade and still sit on the bench.
Even one of the most liberal judges – Ruth Bader Ginsberg
– has some concerns in that area, according to Sen. John
Cornyn (R-TX).
“She has questioned the intellectual moorings and foundation
of Roe v. Wade and so it's not just among conservatives who worry
about this sort of judicial adverture-someness when it comes to
making new theories of law that essentially trump the lawmaking
authority of the elected representatives of the people,”
Cornyn said.
Conservatives say even if a pro-life conservative gets on the
bench, it still will not tip the scales and favor towards overturning
Roe v. Wade. But either way, the Russell Caucus room is the place
to be this summer. Expect wall-to-wall television coverage. It
will be must-see TV.
