Free Software Unlocks Pornography
in Video Game

The notoriously violent and immensely popular video game "Grand
Theft Auto" has a special feature to it – pornography.
And with the help of a simple piece of free software available
online, anyone playing the game can access it.
"Grand Theft Auto San Andreas" is
already controversial because players carjack vehicles and kill
in order to score points. But now players can turn the game into
a virtual world of interactive pornography.
“Unbeknownst to millions of parents, kids could be engaged
in literally directing porn scenes,” said David Walsh of
the National Institute on Media and the Family.
Walsh is concerned about the consequences. He said computer savvy
kids as young as 12 may be able to access the software. California
state lawmaker Leland Yee (D-CA) shares his concern.
“Psychologically, what happens is that you begin to dehumanize
relationships,” Yee said.
The Dutch creator of the controversial software said his modification
merely unlocked a code, which uncovered pornography that already
existed within the game - but was hidden. The creators of "Grand
Theft Auto" claim the sexually explicit scenes were not originally
there.
Meanwhile, the controversy has prompted an investigation by the
entertainment software ratings board. They are checking to see
if the makers hid the pornography in order to market the game
to more consumers. An "adult only" rating would have
kept it out of most retail stores.
Even more disturbing, said Dr. Walsh, is the idea that outside
programmers may be able to produce sexually explicit material
and add it to any existing game, meaning that the game children
buy is not necessarily the one they are playing.
