over Gaza Pullout

JERUSALEM, Israel - Israeli and Palestinian leaders are trying
to calm things down after an explosive weekend in the Middle East.
In the past four days, Palestinians have fought
Palestinians, Jews have fought Jews, and both sides have fought
each other.
The terrorist group Hamas launched the new wave of violence last
week with rocket attacks on Israel. That set up a deadly clash
between Hamas and Palestinian police, who tried to crack down
on Hamas.
Israel has surrounded Gaza with tanks and troops and is prepared
for a massive strike against the terrorists. But the Israeli cabinet
is giving Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a little more time
to act.
Isaac Herzog, Israeli Housing Minister said, “It is clearly
the responsibility of the Palestinians to take all measures to
stop the flaring up. But if they cannot manage it, we will have
to do it instead.”
More than 100 rockets have hit Israeli communities near Gaza
in the past four days, killing some, wounding others, and fraying
nerves. Israel responded with several targeted killings against
Hamas leaders.
In the meantime, an even bigger trauma for Israelis: Jews clashing
with Jews over the plan to evict settlers from the Gaza Strip.
Twenty-thousand police and soldiers have mobilized to prevent
as many as 100,000 pull-out opponents from marching to Gaza today
in protest.
