A Look at the Court after Rehnquist

CBN.com –WASHINGTON - The Chief Justice of the United States, William Rehnquist, was laid to rest Wednesday.

He died of thyroid cancer Saturday.

Chief Justice Rehnquist's casket was taken inside St. Matthew's Cathedral Wednesday. With no cameras allowed inside, it was the last image the nation saw of a man many are remembering as a giant in American law. He was someone who defended conservative principles in his public life.

After Wednesday's service, Rehnquist was buried next to his wife at Arlington National Cemetery. The tributes poured in all day.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) remarked, "His passing marks a sad day for America, but it's also a day to reflect on our great fortune to have had William Rehnquist in the service of our nation."

The Rehnquist funeral comes just days before the Senate gets ready to hold hearings on the nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court. Rehnquist was Roberts’ mentor and now, if confirmed, would replace Rehnquist as chief justice.

President Bush wants Roberts confirmed before the new court session begins, October 3. That looks to be realistic.

But complicating matters is that the President still needs to nominate someone to replace the moderate Sandra Day O'Connor. Some unanswered questions: Will he go with a woman? Will he go with a moderate like Attorney General Alberto Gonzales? Or will he go with a strong conservative like Janice Rogers Brown, Michael Luttig, or Priscilla Owen?

If that is the case, get ready for an all-out political war.
