WASHINGTON - When it comes to Harriet Miers, the evangelical community seems split. Some groups will not support her because she is an unknown with no proven judicial track record on abortion and other issues important to evangelicals. Others such as Focus on the Family Chairman James Dobson support her
Dobson supported Miers since the beginning. He was quoted on his radio show saying, "When you know some of the things I know - that I probably shouldn't know, that would take me in this direction - you would understand why I have said, with fear and trepidation, that I believe Harriet Miers will be a good justice."
Those comments led some members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to start wondering what Dobson knows about Miers that senators do not know
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) said, "I believe that we ought to call James Dobson as a witness at the Senate Judiciary hearings and find out what kind of assurances he's received. If those assurances are good enough for James Dobson, then all of America ought to hear them."
But Dobson beat them to the punch. On his national radio broadcast airing today, he told his listeners he never received any private assurances on Miers when he spoke to Karl Rove, the White House's deputy chief of staff.
"Karl Rove didn't tell me anything about the way Harriet Miers would vote on cases that may come before the Supreme Court,” Dobson remarked. “We did not discuss Roe v. Wade in any context, or any other pending issue that will be before the court."
Dobson says Rove called assure him that Miers is a committed evangelical Christian. It became controversial because Dobson knew that information before it became public. So, on his show, he challenged judiciary members to call him in to testify if they want.
"If they want to do that, then I just suggest that they quit talking about it and just go do it. I have nothing to hide. And I'll be happy to come and talk to you, but I won't have anything to say that I haven’t just told millions of people and so that's really the end of my statement,” stated Dobson.
It may be the end of his statement, but no one is quite sure how it will end for Miers.
