Doctors Cautious as Sharon Comes Out of Coma

By Chris Mitchell
Middle East Bureau Chief

CBN.comJERUSALEM, Israel - Doctors have begun to bring Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon gradually out of his medically induced coma.

The initial signs look good. Doctors reported today that Sharon moved one of his hands, but he remains in critical condition.

The hospital director said that Sharon began to breathe on his own when doctors began to bring him out of the coma. While it is a promising sign of brain activity, he also expressed caution.

Hadassah Hospital's director Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef said, "It's important to you to know that the condition of Prime Minister Sharon is still severe and critical."

One of Sharon’s neurosurgeons said that while Sharon’s chances for survival are "very high," his ability to think and draw conclusions will be impaired. With this prognosis, it is unlikely that Sharon could ever function again as prime minister.

Sharon's condition is getting worldwide coverage. Broadcasters from all over the globe have come here to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital to report on the changing status of Sharon’s health.

The worldwide attention is a sign of the enormous significance of the office of the Israeli prime minister.

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert chaired the first regular cabinet meeting without Sharon on Sunday. Government officials hope that the regular functioning of the government will convey a sense of continuity and stability to both the world and Israel’s enemies.

During the cabinet meeting, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom warned about one of Israel’s most dangerous enemies - Iran. He said that Iran is getting more and more confident in its drive to produce nuclear weapons, since the world has failed to bring the issue to the United Nations Security Council.

It is certain that whoever will be Israel’s next prime minister; the threat of Iran’s nuclear program will be one of the most serious issues he will face. The critical elections for the next prime minister and the new Knesset will be held on March 28.
