President Obama signed a bill Tuesday to increase voluntary public service. It was named the Edward Kennedy Serve America Act.
Sen. Kennedy and and former president Bill Clinton were on hand for Tuesday's signing events.
The money will help several programs including Americorps, which was started by President Clinton. The service group hopes to triple in size over the next eight years.
The bill also ties volunteer work to money for college, but some conservatives say it is too costly.
Sen. Jim DeMint R-SC recently told CBN News the program could counter the work of Christian charities.
"We may even create competitors to Christian charities or people who are working for alternative causes," he said. We may be working for this traditional family. This money may be going to support alternative lifestyles."
The Serve America act carries a price tag of $5.7 billion.
