The U.S. House has passed a bill to boost car sales, and get old gas guzzlers off the road.
The plan would give car buyers a $3,500 voucher for trading in their old car and buying a new one that gets at least 22 miles per gallon.
That voucher would go up to $4,500 if the new cars gets 10 more miles per gallon than the trade-in
To qualify for the voucher, the old vehicle must get 18 miles per gallon, or less.
The bill would also ensure that dealership crush or shred the old vehicles.
The program will cost taxpayers $4 billion.
